Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley criticised for 'denying privilege'

Actress Daisy Ridley is facing a backlash after claiming she is no more privileged than her Star Wars co-star John Boyega.

Ridley was born in Westminster and was privately educated, while Boyega is the son of British-Nigerian parents, who grew up on an estate in south London and applied for a hardship fund to join Theatre Peckham.

Her remarks, made in an interview with The Guardian, have been criticised as "tone deaf" on social media.

Boyega posted a Star Wars video on Instagram and said "I have all the love in my heart for Oscar, Daisy, and everyone else I've shared the silver screen with", although it is not known if this is in response to the criticism of his co-star.

In her interview, asked if she thought her privilege made it easier to deal with fame, Ridley apparently seemed shocked and replied: "The privilege I have - how? No, genuinely, how?"

According to the article, when writer Nosheen Iqbal explained she meant in terms of class and wealth, and added that it was not a criticism, Ridley went on to say there was little difference between her experiences and those of Boyega.

"John grew up on a council estate in Peckham and I think me and him are similar enough that… no."

Asked whether private school gave her additional confidence, she replied: "No. I think, also, it has taken me a little while to be okay with it.

"I was always fairly confident, and I think that comes from being part of a big family who are all quite chatty."

She later added: "I'm not saying what you're saying is wrong. I've just never been asked that before, so I'm like, oh. I don't think so."

Many readers have hit out at Ridley on social media.

"The very definition of #privilege; not even being aware of how your schooling & parents could have influenced your life," one Twitter user said.

Another said: "Daisy Ridley being tone deaf and exposing herself as completely blind to her immense privilege."

However, others defended Ridley, with one fan saying that "like any other human being, she isn't perfect and she too can make mistakes and learn from them. Yes she is ignorant but for that she needs to be educated properly and not cancelled".
